Like I said in my previous post I am totally addicted to ABC’s “How To Get Away with Murder“, and last weeks episode was so good. SO GOOD. Annalise was on fire in court, as the short scene embedded below shows not only why Viola Davis deserves an Emmy, but also why this show is worth watching.
Viola Davis in a buzzed about scene of “Murder”
I’m not generally into crime shows, because I feel like most of them start good but begin to get redundant with their cases. Either that or the whole show gets silly, which was the case of “Boston Legal” with William Shatner and James Spader. I hope neither situation happens with “Murder”, but I’m worried. The characters are the main draw for me, and that murder mystery shown in the “flash forward” segments keep me coming back to dissect the clues. But at the end of the last episode, it was announced that there are only 2 episodes before we find out who the killer is, and I’m worried that once that mystery is solved, the show won’t be as intriguing.
I’m not too worried though because I have totally fallen in love with the characters, and only small pieces of their lives have been shown so far. For instance, the corny goofball Asher (Matt McGorry) had a chance to show a different side of his character last week. And I officially fell in love with Laurel (Karla Souza) and her Hot crush Frank (Charlie Weber) the week prior. So there is still a lot to learn about each of the characters, which is one thing that might keep me watching. And there’s even a possibility that Wes (Alfred Enoch) and Rebecca (Kate Findlay) won’t irritate me as much in future episodes. Right now I can’t stand Wes’ self righteous attitude and his undying lust for this girl who treats him so poorly, or Rebecca’s sarcastic aloofness and general lack of concern to the fact that she’s a MURDER SUSPECT!!
Anyway, back to THE murder. Whether we like it or not, the murderer will be revealed in 2 more episodes, and I think all of us have been watching the clues and have some ideas of #whodunnit. But what do we know so far about this murder?
Tom Verica as Sam Keating, the victim
Well, we know that Annalise’s husband Sam Keating (Tom Verica) is the victim, as his dead body was revealed at the end of the very first episode. We know that the Keating 5 kids (with the exception of Asher) and Rebecca are frantically trying to get rid of the body and cover their tracks. We know that for whatever reason, Wes manipulated a coin toss so that the group would bury the body, although a later decision from Laurel had them agreeing it was best to burn the body.
We don’t really know Annalise’s involvement, although a lot have assumed that she orchestrated the murder somehow. Last week, she seemed shocked and worried, calling her employee Bonnie (Liza Weil) to tell her “something terrible” had happened. But knowing Mrs. Keating, that could be a way to fake concern and give the impression she had nothing to do with it. I personally feel that wasn’t faked, because earlier in the episode she begrudgingly admitted to Sam that she did love him despite his philandering.
Liza Weil as Bonnie, a prime suspect or not?
So, who killed Sam? And Why?
My detective brain tells me that Bonnie did it, and I had this inkling a few episodes back. There is OBVIOUSLY something going on, or something that went on, or something she wishes would happen between her and Sam. There have been moments of them gazing at each other in weird ways, and their brief conversations are always dripping with underlying lust and some sort of complicated history. There is also the pseudo-loyalty she claims to have for Annalise, which the viewers nor Annalise are buying based on how Bonnie was able to get Rebecca’s “confession” tape about four episodes back.
Charlie Weber as Frank, the hot and loyal employee
The talk she had with Laurel last week about Frank was also revealing. She told Laurel not to lead Frank on, because she’ll end up breaking his heart, and something about that whole speech made me think she was talking about her own feelings… possibly towards Sam. Maybe she felt like he led her on and broke her heart in the past, or present. But is that really a strong enough motive? Is she willing to kill him because he never gave her the time of day and/or broke her heart? They do say “hell hath no fury like a woman scorned”, and if she did do the crime it would explain why she slept with Asher the night the Keating 5 were figuring out what to do with the body, it’s her alibi. Point is, she’s been working under Annalise for long enough to know how to do the crime but not do the time, so she is a plausible suspect for the murder.
Having said that, Frank could also potentially “get away with murder” if he wanted to. And last week displayed a genuine loyalty to Annalise, so if she wanted him to kill Sam then he may just be willing to do it for her, since they are “like family” according to Bonnie. However, he’s got an alibi as he was home and trying to contact Laurel while they were at the bonfire worried about the body. He probably doesn’t have anything to do with it, but something that happened last week leads me to my next possible killer.
Billy Brown as Nate, another potential suspect
Annalise’s ex-boyfriend cop Nate (Billy Brown) has been removed from the police force at this point, and he now has a vendetta against her and her team. Annalise asked Frank to plant a cell phone in a students car in hopes it would make him a suspect in the killing of Sam’s former student and mistress. Nate snapped pictures of Frank planting the phone, so he’s clearly trying to take Annalise’s practice down. We also have to remember that while him and Annalise were on better terms, she ultimately had him confirm that Sam was lying about his whereabouts when his college mistress was killed.
Knowing that Annalise is aware that Sam cheated, Nate might have killed Sam knowing that Annalise would make a prime suspect with the aforementioned “woman scorned” motive. It’s possible because that’s a sure fire way to take her down, with her going to jail as the ultimate redemption. We don’t know too much about Nate, we don’t exactly how vindictive he is, but we can’t count him out because it would make sense that he has something to do with the murder.
Aja Naomi King, Jack Falahee and Karla Souza, 3 of the Keating 5 getting rid of the body
Now, what some viewers thought all along might be the case, maybe Annalise did convince someone to off Sam for her. It would have to be somebody extremely loyal to her, so Frank could be a suspect, but this can also apply to most of the students. Although during their time trying to hide the body they are all completely frazzled and on the brink of insanity, especially poor Michaela (Aja Naomi King) and Connor (Jack Falahee). If they can’t dispose of the body without rattled nerves, than I doubt they could kill somebody and maintain a sense of sanity. It could also be one of the many murderers we can assume Annalise has gotten off, committing the murder as payback to her for their freedom?
Of all those suspects, Bonnie seems like the one to me, but I’d LOVE to be surprised in a realistic and clever way. I would just hate for the murderer to be someone we haven’t met yet. The thing I hated about Denzel Washington’s “The Bone Collector” back in the late 90’s, we watched the entire movie looking for clues and in the end the killer was somebody we barely knew.
What do YOU think? Who Did It?
